The NSM is responsible for managing the nursing/care department within defined structures & procedures.
This entails management of the daily care operations, the nursing/care staff, & the medical stock & equipment. Constructively & proactively communicating with potential residents, current residents, their families & other stakeholders (e.g. doctor) is a key responsibility of the role.
As part of the facility management team, very close liaison with the Facility Manager (FM) is crucial.
RESIDENT CARE MANAGEMENT
- Oversees all care operations to ensure and enforce adherence to standards, policies and procedures (e.g. code of conduct, leave policy, rounds report).
- Updates and monitors nursing staff adherence to resident treatment plans and meal plan
- Conducts resident assessments before (or within 7 days after) admission (and periodically as needed).
- Checks nursing reports (as completed by the nurses) to ensure accurate recording of resident health (including medication, intake and output, sleeping, and bathing).
- Addresses and follows up on resident health concerns as identified by the nurses.
- Checks and signs-off on incident reports (as completed by the nurses).
- Appropriately addresses and follows up on reported incidents (e.g. has the wound been dressed and reported to the doctor).
- Consults with the doctor regarding resident health concerns.
- Liaises openly, constructively and regularly with the doctor(s) regarding residents' condition and treatments. This includes feedback discussions after doctor rounds.
- Updates (or checks that nurses updates) nursing reports as per doctor’s instructions/note
- Checks that residents are encouraged (by care staff and care liaison) to interact and participate in activities. Follows up on residents of concern.
- Observes residents, identify needs, delegate appropriate action to the care staff and follow up on execution of tasks (daily patient rounds).
- Provides FM with updated resident information so that records can be updated.
- Perform rounds at mealtimes to check that updated nutritional records are displayed and adhered to.
- Conduct annual DQ98 assessments (or, if applicable, check that the village nurse conducts it).
- Timeously and effectively addresses resident concerns.
STAFF MANAGEMENT
- Monitors and enforces staff adherence to standards, policies and procedures.
- Reviews and signs the initial employment documents with new appointed nurses (employment contract, job profile & performance agreement, induction checklist).
- Checks that the nurse(s) follows the induction process with newly appointed caregiver
- Monitors and manages nurses' performance and conducts nurses’ performance assessments.
- Reviews caregivers’ performance assessments as conducted by the nurses and address outliers.
- Provides input to monthly shift scheduling to ensure effective care teams, arranges sufficient staff coverage in emergencies (in liaison with the FM), and oversees daily attendance sign-off on duty roster.
- Oversees daily attendance sign-off on duty roster and ensures that follow-ups and reporting is done (e.g. sick notes).
- Signs off on the daily in-service training. Gets feedback on training and provide training on areas of concern.
- Addresses staff grievances together with the FM.
- Initiates disciplinary action as authorised (i.e., issue warnings, Performance Improvement Processes), seek advice from and refers cases to the Labour Relations department, together with the FM or Registered Nurse, as relevant.
- Conducts regular rounds amongst care staff to ensure adherence to ward routines and delegations.
- Oversees allocation of staff in delegated areas.
- Manages and oversees daily handovers between shift care staff.
MEDICATION MANAGEMENT
- Controls access to scheduled medication.
- Checks that medication is signed off and administered according to doctor’s orders.
- Verifies that the nurse(s) has checked the contents of the blister packs against the prescriptions.
- Checks the analgesics file to confirm that it is accurately issued and signed-off.
- Controls miscellaneous stock ordered for residents directly from pharmacies.
- Checks that the day cupboard and night cupboard stock is controlled accurately (with FM).
- Monitors adherence to medical stock control procedures.
- Checks accuracy of medical charges (with FM).
- Checks that all medical and care equipment is available and maintained in working order.
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
- Monitors cleanliness and tidiness of the facility (shared responsibility with the FM).
- Monitors food & beverage quality and addresses shortcomings (shared responsibility with the FM, Charge Sister where relevant).
- Serves as the official OHS Representative (together with the FM) and implement action as per the OHS service provider.
- Checks and signs off on monthly management reports (as compiled by the FM).
- Monitors multi-disciplinary (physiotherapist, occupational therapist, biokineticist, audiologist, etc.) service provision, discusses resident progress with service providers and arranges treatment plans.
- Works one weekend per month (i.e. weekend rounds – as per employment contract).
CLIENT RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
- Communicates regularly and proactively with residents’ family members to provide updates and feedback on resident health, well-being, activities and/or doctor’s appointments.
- Engages constructively and informatively with potential residents/families in active pursuit of new admissions, together with the team.
- Addresses resident/resident family member complaints and/or concerns together with the FM.
- Liaises with FM on all care related communication to residents/families.
PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT
- Interacts with all stakeholders (co-workers, managers, residents, resident families/visitors in a helpful, professional, respectful, friendly manner.
- Constructively participates in training & similar activities as required.
- Acts as a responsible, reliable team member (e.g. willing to assist, responds constructively to corrections, reports deviations from standards).
- Executes instructions in a respectful, prompt, efficient, compliant manner.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Qualification: Bachelor of Nursing Degree
- Professional Registration: Active SANC Registration as a Registered Professional Nurse
- Experience: At least 5 years management experience (in the healthcare industry, e.g. ward charge, nursing services manager)
- Own transport
- Strong communication skills (English professionally competent)
- Ability to work independently
- Hours: 06h30 – 15h30 Monday-Friday
